Why Is My Dog Not Sleeping?

Have you been struggling with getting your dog to go to sleep during the night? It can be annoying and worrying  when it’s time for bed, your dog suddenly wants to get up and play. It’s even more concerning when you wake up in the middle of the night to find your dog is wide awake sitting by the bed, staring at you. What’s going on? Why is your dog not sleeping? Here are a few of the possibilities that you should consider.

Dog not sleeping

The Wrong Climate

It’s quite possible that there’s an issue with the environment in your home. This simply means that your pet pooch is either too cold or too hot. This issue is preventing them from getting the silent night that they need and that you want. If a dog is too hot, then they will be panting a lot. Through the summer, it might be worth putting a fan in your room to cool them down or opening a window. If your dog is too cold it will curl into a tight ball. It will also do this if it doesn’t feel secure and therefore will adopt a protective stance even when lying down. If this is the case, consider turning on the heating or adding some extra layers to their bed.

Get A New Bed

It’s a fallacy to say that dogs will sleep anywhere be it at the foot of the bed or on a hard floor. Dogs can be very picky sleepers and if they can’t find the perfect spot to rest their head, they will wander and will remain restless until the early hours. You might want to consider letting your dog wander until they find a comfortable place to sleep. If they do this they will usually be looking for a place to warm up or cool down. Alternatively, you can think about purchasing a brand new bed for your dog. The best beds, as highlighted by sites like Your Playful Pets, provide fantastic benefits with the same types of design used to give you and your family the best night sleep possible.

Not Enough Play

Finally, it’s possible that you are simply not providing enough play for your pet through the day. The issue here is that your pet won’t be getting enough exercise. This means that by the time it is time for bed, they won’t want to go. Different breeds require different levels of exercise. While some can have a run around the yard, others will need a good few miles on their leash through the day. You should make sure you research this before you actually decide on a dog breed to bring home. It’s quite possible that an energetic dog is not what you need.

Not Ready

Lastly, it’s possible that your pet simply wasn’t ready for bed. If that’s the case, it’s probably because you forgot to get them a drink, get them food or take them outside to use the bathroom for the final time. If you don’t want to be woken up in the middle of the night it’s best to do these things just before your head hits the pillow.

  1. Hi Doc,
All the mentioned reasons can be main reasons.
I think one reason can be “Not feeding proper food”. Because I have a dog and in the starting I was not able to understand what is the problem and why my dog is not happy and don’t sleep properly. I tried many things, then I googled it and found proper diet. I then realized I was feeding him enough but I was not feeding him in a proper manner.
