With pet health care, the challenges of veterinary costs are a major factor. Many are unaware how expensive it can be to treat a sick pet.  Fortunately, there are options that pet owners have when it comes with dealing with pet health costs.  Pet Insurance is becoming more popular with pet owners as a way to deal with unexpected costs. While pet insurance is a great option for owners to handle veterinary visits, it comes with its challenges. Pre-existing conditions are often not covered. Depending on the company there may be a long list of medical conditions that are not covered also. The costs of pet insurance may also deter budget conscious owners. Fortunately there is an alternative to pet insurance for one to consider. Eusoh is a company that offers community based pet care as an option for veterinary costs.

How it works

As an alternative to pet insurance, Eusoh works as a community based platform. When you sign up for their services, you will join a group of pet owners or create your own. If you or someone in the group comes up with a veterinary expense, they share the cost percentage wise among the members.

Specific details about the Eusoh platform

Eusoh is not a pet insurance company. It is a software platform that facilitates cost sharing of veterinary expenses for a monthly subscription price.  At the time of sign-up they require you to make a $48 deposit into a pledge account. Then there is a $10 monthly subscription charge.  If you experience a veterinary expense, you are responsible to pay a yearly $250 deductible before you qualify for a reimbursement. After your deductible they expect you to pay 20% of any submitted expenses and the group you are a part of will cover the rest. It is that simple. There is a yearly reimbursement limit of $8500.

Eusoh vs pet insurance

Since Eusoh is a cost sharing service, monthly costs are lower when compared to traditional pet insurance. Most cost sharing services have fewer restrictions for coverage of certain medical conditions making it a great alternative to pet insurance.

Special features

Eusoh has a referral program where you can get paid for having your friends join the platform.  So if you have a large network of friends with pets this may be a great opportunity to earn extra income.

Pros

Easy to join and sign up for
A lower cost alternative for pet insurance
Have an option to join or create your own cost sharing groups
Can get paid for referral of your friends

Cons

Your coverage of your veterinary expenses relies on good faith of group members
Your reimbursement amounts will be limited compared to common pet insurance plans. Though $8500 will be enough for most pets.
Depending on your submitted veterinary expenses, your initial out of pocket expense may be larger short term when compared to pet insurance. But  long term you are most likely to save money.

Wrap up

With unexpected veterinary expenses always being a concern for pet owners it is great to have options.  Eusoh is a great alternative to pet insurance.  It is also decreases the need for fund raisers to help with care of pets.  You can just form a group with fellow pet owners and be prepared financially for an unexpected expense. You can sign up here and enter the ambassador code “anmldrblog” so they know where you were referred from. Thanks for reading my post on the Eusoh review.

  1. I never would have thought that pets need insurance as well but it makes total sense. Thankfully I don’t have to think about that because I don’t have a pet! LOL! Insurance drives me bananas!

  2. This is an interesting idea. I’ve heard of pet insurance, but this is the first I’ve heard of any kind of community plan. I think it’s worth looking into more closely. Thanks!

  3. Pets definitely need insurance considering the price vets charge these days. I had never heard about this type of service before. I am not sure I would trust others to do their part–that said–it does seem like a viable alternative to traditional pet insurance.

  4. A friend of mine has a beautiful Mastiff who recently needed life saving surgery costing over $5k. While she had insurance, she needed to pay the bill and then claim the amount from her insurance company. In desperation to save her best friends life, she reached out to her friends and network of fellow dog lovers. Within a few days, the full amount had been raised. Luckily her dear boy not only survive the surgery but is now 6 month in recovery – thank goodness! I can see this alternative to insurance could be really effective and potentially even more suited for some families who may not always be able to come up with the capital to pay for veterinary bills before the insurance company will pay out.

  5. Nice to see another innovative platform. There is a rise now in health-based tech apps that challenge the norms of traditional healthcare and it is good to see, holds the standard higher!

  6. This is a very interesting alternative to pet insurance which can be very expensive. I hope that this because a trusting way to seek healthcare aid for pets. People love their pets like family and shouldn’t be forced to put their dog down because they can’t afford care.

  7. Never been a pet owner but I can see how pet insurance is just as important as human insurance. Good information for those who want to care for their pets health options.

  8. First time to hear about pet insurance. I will share this to my cousins as she have a lot of pets that need to be cover by this insurance.

  9. I’ve never heard of this brand, but your in-depth review made me interested. Seems like a great option for a pet insurance,

  10. I’m all for this program. As my dog is part of my family and I believe he also entitled to have an health insurance. Especially the bill every time to the doctor is pretty steep so it would be good to have some cover on that. Thx for sharing this.

  11. This is a very informative article! Pet insurance- that’s really an need one. I will share this with my friends who have pets.

  12. Re: Euso
Will I be able to register my Senior Dogs?
What if a dog has what is decided to be a Pre-Existing Condition? Can tbey still be covered?

    • Hello Cathy . You should be able to register your Senior dogs. As far as Pre-existing conditions there are possibly some restriction depending on the extent of the condtion and how much it has been treated in the past. But the group you join will have some guidelines as well for this.

      • So if there is a deductible yearly , who do I pay that 259 dollars to ? EUSOH ? Plus I pay 10 dollars per month plus I keep at least 48$ in my account that EUSOH DRAWS FROM ? Just trying to get a understanding , what if EUSOH doesn’t pay my claim after I’ve paid them the 250 , do they cover pre existing , cancer treatments ?? Yes , my pet has cancer and already expenses are over 250 😔 Isn’t there a way to know before joining if they cover some pre existing conditions , like my Boston , never been sick just now diagnosed with lymphoma, he’s young just 5 yrs old , I’d be happy to join but would want to know if once I did my wait period and paid my 250 up front they would reimburse me the rest of the cost up to the yearly aloud amount , I can’t join going into this in the blind would need facts first

  14. How does this work when you’re at the vet and are facing a $3000+ bill for an emergency gastronomy? You as the owner still must find a way to pay that amount in full out of pocket, am I correct? And then wait for reimbursement? How long does reimbursement take?

The problem with all these models, including pet insurance, is they do NOTHING to assist owners with what can often be an enormous, upfront, out-of-pocket expense. Absent a generous credit line, many people cannot readily access a large amount of money that quickly.

According to the Pew Research Center and the Federal Reserve, many Americans can not access just $400 in the event of an emergency. This remains a significant problem when it comes to paying for veterinary care, and qualifying for credit to finance the upfront cost (such as through CareCredit) is limited to those with prime and super-prime credit scores. This effectively means that approval rates for options such as CareCredit hover around 40% nationally. This leaves a significant amount of pet owners abandoned when they are most in need, when a beloved family member’s life needs saving.

We do not face this challenge with human health insurance, as there is usually an affordable co-pay, although High Deductible Health Plans (HDHPs) have even disrupted that to some extent. However, human physicians will still treat the patient. Veterinarians do not, and expect payment upfront to treat. How does Eusoh help to solve this very real and very challenging problem, that too often results in economic euthanasia of treatable cases?

    • Hi Suzanne. yes this program is an reimbursement program. If you go to the Eusoh website they should be able to tell you how long a reimbursment will take. The challenge that we have with veterinary care is that not everyone thinks of their pets the same. Some people think of their pets as family while others may only think of them as property. Therefore it is difficult to have the same model of health insurance for pets just as with human medicine. In order to have the same model the cost of pet insurance would be near the cost of human plans. Many people are not willing to pay $300 -$500 a month to provide insurance for their pet . Therefore there are very limited options to help with veterinary costs that don’t involve reimbursement.

  15. Suzanne Cannon stated very real scenario and very well written. My pup, after only coming into our family for 7 days, was diagnosed with Parvo. I have a high-limit credit card and only use for emergency, so handed it over and the vet immediately put her on I.V. and she came home 5 weeks later. The bill was over $5k. Because they had my credit card on file, they did not charge me for the treatment until the day she came home. It was a VCA hospital and they are a big establishment able to do this type of billing with investor backing. I know because I would visit my pup every day, twice a day, for an hour at a time and get updates on my baby. The vet, when it was all done, had gone to the investors and request a reduction in my total billing otherwise would have been more. So, there are some place that have the backing creating the ability to care for our fur babies and then get paid. Look to the VCAs because of their investor ability they are able to better assist with cost. But remember, they are expensive, as well because they are a big establishment. But with my amazing outcome, I will use them for that reason. My baby girl is now 3 years of spit fire!

  16. This sounds like a great idea. While I was on the way to maxing out my CareCredit card to pay for emergency vet expenses, I was grateful that I was at least able to somehow pay for it. I did NOT want to get to a point that I had to make a decision based on money. “Sorry, let’s stop. I can’t afford it any more.” My philosophy is, is that bills can always be paid off over time, but you can never reconcile regret for having made a decision based on money.

  17. So grateful to this blog and review. I have had dogs for the past 10 years. I lost one dog unexpectedly last year and realized how important having medical and wellness coverage was particularly as they age. Neither had any pre-existing conditions. Was I ever surprised when I received notification from my Pet Insurance provider that my premium was going up from $50 a month to about $200 a month. Without any real explanation nor understanding of what was changing in the dog insurance market I got on the hunt for alternatives. While there are a number of options, the pricing for traditional insurance was not measurably that much different or less based on my specific needs. I came across the animal doctor blog and an alternative to pet insurance using a Eusoh’s community based platform. What a game changer!! I made the switch after speaking with them directly and reviewing several scenarios for my pets. Really check this out and do the math. Compare it against your pet’s needs and projected costs. It may not work for everyone but it’s definitely the only viable and competitive option I”m aware of that’s cost based and covers both wellness and medical expenses. This is a fairly new model and young company. We should support them so we all benefit from more cost effective models that support healthy pets.
